How to insert and delete nodes when drawing on the AI map

Learn how to use the Ruler on the AI Map to draw and save custom measurement lines or polygons.

How to insert and delete nodes when drawing on the AI map

When you draw or adjust a shape on the map, the outline is made of nodes connected by straight edges.

Nodes are also sometimes called vertices or points. You can add, move, and delete nodes to fine-tune shapes without redrawing them from scratch.

Use this when editing shapes such as:

  • Lawns

  • Beds

  • Surfaces

  • Lot boundaries

  • Custom service areas

Draw a shape node by node

Use Node draw when you want precise point-by-point control.

  1. Select the Node draw tool from the tools panel.

  2. Click once on the map for each corner of your shape.

  3. Each click adds a node and connects it to the previous node.

  4. Continue clicking until the outline is complete.

  5. To finish the shape, right-click or click back on the first node to close it.

Tip: Use Free draw if you prefer to trace a shape by dragging. You can edit nodes after the shape is created.

Insert a node into an existing edge

You can add a new node to an existing edge when you need to create a new corner or add more detail.

  1. Hover over the shape outline.

  2. A midpoint handle appears between existing nodes.

  3. Click the midpoint handle to add a new node, or drag it to add and position the node at the same time.

  4. The edge now bends at the new node.

Repeat this on any edge where you need more detail.

Move a node

  1. Hover over an existing node until the cursor changes to a grab hand.

  2. Click and drag the node to its new position.

  3. Release to place it.

Delete a node

You can delete a node in two ways.

Option 1: Right-click

  1. Right-click directly on the node you want to remove.

  2. The node is deleted, and the neighboring nodes reconnect with one edge.

Option 2: Delete or Backspace

  1. Hover over the node or click and hold the node so it is highlighted.

  2. Press Delete or Backspace.

A polygon needs at least three nodes to stay valid. If you need to remove the full shape, use Erase instead.
