Ruler Tool FAQ

Find answers to common questions about using the Ruler tool to measure custom lengths, areas, and node-based shapes on the AI Map.

What is the Ruler tool?

The Ruler tool lets you measure custom lengths and areas directly on the AI Map.

Where can I find the Ruler tool?

Open a property and look at the bottom-right corner of the AI map and in a proposal --> Add Install. Click the Ruler icon to turn it on.

How do I turn the Ruler off?

Click the Ruler icon again to turn it off.

What can I measure with the Ruler?

You can measure driveways, walkways, lawns, beds, curved areas, irregular shapes, or any custom area not already detected by AI.

How do I draw with the Ruler?

You can draw in two ways:

  • Click to place nodes for precise lines and polygons

  • Press and hold to free-form draw curves and irregular shapes

Can I measure both length and area?

Yes. The Ruler shows segment length, enclosed area, and perimeter when the shape is closed.

How do I measure an area?

Draw around the area and close the shape by connecting the last point back to the starting point. Duranta will show the area in sq ft and the perimeter in ft.

Can I create a service from a measured area?

Yes. After closing a shape, click + Create service. Duranta will create a maintenance service and automatically apply the measured area as the service area.

What happens if I turn the Ruler off?

Turning the Ruler off clears unsaved measurements. Create a service first if you want to keep the measured area.

Why don’t I see the Ruler tool?

The Ruler is in read-only mode while adding a maintenance service or install in the proposal flow. This means you can see existing measurements, but you cannot create new ones.

To create new Ruler measurements, go back to the AI Map before opening the proposal flow.

Is the Ruler available on mobile?

The enhanced Ruler is currently available in the web app. Mobile support is coming next.

On mobile, you can still measure a regular length, but enclosed perimeter and square-foot area measurements are not available yet.

What is draw by Node?

Draw by Node lets you create a precise shape by clicking point by point on the AI Map. Each click adds a node, and Duranta connects the nodes with straight lines

What is free draw?

Free Draw lets you draw a shape by pressing and holding while moving your cursor across the map.

What are nodes?

Nodes are the points that make up a shape on the AI Map. They are connected by straight edges and are also called vertices or points.

When should I use nodes?

Use nodes when you need precise control over a shape, such as a lawn, bed, surface, lot boundary, or custom service area.

How do I draw a shape node by node?

Select Node draw, then click once on the map for each corner of the shape. To finish, right-click or click back on the first node to close the shape.

Can I use Free draw instead?

Yes. Use Free draw if you prefer to trace a shape by dragging. You can still edit nodes after the shape is created.

How do I insert a node into an existing edge?

Hover over the shape outline. When the midpoint handle appears between two nodes, click it to add a new node or drag it to add and position the node at the same time.

How do I move a node?

Hover over an existing node until the cursor changes to a grab hand, then click and drag the node to its new position.

How do I delete a node?

You can delete a node in two ways:

  • Right-click directly on the node

  • Hover over the node and press Delete or Backspace

Why can’t I delete more nodes?

A polygon needs at least three nodes to stay valid. If you need to remove the full shape, use Erase instead.

What happens after I delete a node?

The node is removed, and the neighboring nodes reconnect with one edge.

Can I use this for custom service areas?

Yes. Node editing is useful for adjusting custom service areas before using them in measurements or proposals.

How can I get help or schedule a demo?

You can always contact [email protected] with any questions. Once you sign up, you can also schedule a demo call here: Duranta Demo
